Hello people of a2b!

I ask you all a question, is there any specific need to use the sip and iax conf files? Is there something these files provide that the asterisk realtime db doesn't?

If so list them here, i'm probably going to be taking on a task to get rid of those files all together and use the database only!

Let me know your thoughts!

Hey crash

I've often wondered that same thing myself. I'm glad someone brought up the subject matter. I mean correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the DB do everything that the CONF file does except that it doesn't require a reload of the asterisk.

If that is the case, why would anyone with say more than 10 extensions, and certainly any calling card application NOT use the DB ??

certainly but maybe some peoples wants to keep the original conf file.
I guess we should set an option to create or not those.

I have only read that:
http://voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+realtime
and seems the realtime may just show a little different behaviour than the conf files. Thus, I would suggest that we make conf files, as Areski said, optional (but not remove them completely).

The only difference i saw was this:

Code:
The database peers/users are not kept in memory. These are only loaded when we have a call and then deleted, so there's no support for NAT keep-alives (qualify=) or voicemail indications for these peers.
NOTE: If you enable RealTime caching in your sip.conf, Voicemail MWI works and so does 'sip show peers' - see rtcachefriends=yes

But they provided a fix for that in the "NOTE"
