have a system in place for someone to request free trial. Basically it will generate a client with X minutes (for example 5) or a dollar amount that will expire in X

Perhaps a system that will take a promo code and allow client to sign up for free. Limit it based on email address.

What part of this request can't be satisfied by the existing signup pages, and the config options that govern how much credit a newly signed-up user will receive?

I would think the "Limit it based on email address." part

You know - to store the IP address of the account it is signed up from might be nice to have, and then people couldn't abuse that feature by limiting based on signed up from.

Ah yes, good call. I think as customers can sign in using email/webuipass (in addition to alias/webuipass) adding an index to the database to ensure uniqueness of email addresses would be a solution to this. I don't think it should go into the tree however, as I'm sure there are folks invoicing multiple accounts to one email address.

I agree with you 100% on that. I know I have customers that have multiple accounts on the same E-Mail address.

I think the thrust of this conversation is to limit the "Free Balance" that is offered to new customers that bring people in.

Each time a person wants a new balance right now, just make a new account. By limiting to E-Mail address, you force them to at least make a new e-mail address. But then to limit it to one IP per person as to the "FREEBIE" to limit abuse. Otherwise, you get people in internet cafe's that jsut make a new hotmail account each time they want to get another 50 cents or whatever your free trial balance is.

I don't think that simply limiting by source IP address would add much by way of fraud prevention. For instance I have a routed /29 subnet, so I could take 6 free accounts. Many ISPs use a dynamic IP pool even for their broadband customers, so simply rebooting your router would be enough to gain another free trial.

Taking your example of an internet cafe, as they almost exclusively hide all their clients behind NAT there could only ever be one free signup from each cafe when limiting by IP address. This would deny genuine potential customers from enjoying the free trial.

In short I don't think there is an easy way to effectively police this. Due to this we choose not to offer any balance with the online signup, and rely on testimonials from satisfied customers and word-of-mouth to bring in new custom.

in this case willbe doesnt matter his IP's or email addresses....
