Chameleon version.

I can create customers and they are by default not active.

However the activation email doesn't arrive.

What to do?

I'm not sure about this, but I'm guessing you would need to install sendmail or a similar program on the server so it can send the email.

Yes I did, this is the error

Apr 10 09:34:01 localhost sendmail[5044]: l3ADW1t1005042: to=<[email protected]>, ctladdr=<[email protected]> (48/48), delay=00:01:40, xdelay=00:00:40, mailer=esmtp, pri=120369, relay=gmail.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Name server: gmail.com.: host name lookup failure

Anyone who could share a generic sendmail configuration which works?

Some remote servers (gmail here) may not accept your mails unless your server announces itself through a canonical dns name. You could make your sendmail/postfix use a dyndns name, but still some servers seem to dislike such domains.
