$firstname$ & $lastname$ Variables don't work in a template

I am using the template "Modify Ticket" ticket and I have a problem with those two variables.
They don't work and hence the email received by the customer looks like this:

Dear $firstname$ $lastname$, .......

The problem is also mentioned in this post:

I don't have a problem with any other variables in this template.

Are you using the latest version, and have you updated the Database properly?

Yes to both although I don't have a way to test if the database is at it should be. I did apply all DB updates one by one.
Is there a table that I can check?

Note that I don't have a problem with the variable $ticketowner, I just don't think that the customer should be greeted with that variable when informed that his ticket is modified. Dear Fistname Lastname is much better.
