Yes. Serial numbers are a NEED for fraud and/or stolen cards which can be quickly deactivated.

Can you explain this?

How would serial numbers prevent fraud? How would serial numbers allow for quick deactivation?

Just curios, but what environment are you working in where fraud is common?

For prepaid calling cards.

Serial numbers are good for easy tracking. You know who the cards were sold to based on their serial numbers. The PIN numbers which the system generates are random, and if you have a batch of thousands of cards, it is not easy to keep up with.

Serial numbers also would allow quick and easy way to disable cards in case of theft.

So this "serial number" field would be a new field that could be set to be sequential during the creation of a batch of cards.

How are you keeping track of your card batches currently?

I still don't see how a serial number would make deactivation easier than using the account number?

Also, I am working on a new install of version 1.9.4 and there is now a "serial" field for a customer. It links to a sequential series. I've not used this feature yet, but it does sound like what you are talking about.

I just played with it a bit. I created a new series called 'Test', the generated a batch of 50 cards, using 'Test' as the serial group.

I don't see a method to keep track.

I think the field you are mentioning listed as "Serial" is a typo. I think SERIES belongs there.
Series is a group to identify the card series you are selling...e.g. "$5 Card Targeting India Rates"

You could be right, up until last week I've been using a much older version of a2billing and asterisk.

If it is a series that is used as you suggest, why would it generate them in a sequentially increasing manner?

And I don't understand what you mean by "method to keep track". Do you mean a batch number?

Yes I see the serial nummbers, but...I see no method to control the sequences, nor no method to search do and show the list of certain serial numbers.

I am sure I could do this myself and just put it into the code, but time is the issue.

Not to mention the serial numbers are based on the series, not the whole system. Thus you can get duplicate serial numbers for cards. Not good at all.

What do you mean by control the sequences?

Multiple series' can be created, each would have a sequence starting at 0, so if there is one series for all cards, they would each have a unique serial number.

You can also use the last name field that is filled in when a batch of cards is created. It will have a batch number that can be associated with a serial number. The combination of the two fields is unique and sequential.

if you go into customers, then "search customers", you can search by serial and it allows to search within a range by using the two input fields.

I think what you are looking for is the "Customer ID" that you see on the customer search screen. This is what I've used for the serial number because it is unique in the DB "cardid" field (it is a key field). You can't set it (easily that is), but it is sequential and you can print it on your cards.

if you generate 10000 cards and delete them then generate 10000 more you get a 5+ digit key that looks sensible on the card.

You then know who has what cardid sequence by making a note when you issue cards.
