Below is a report from a satisfied A2Billing customer.

We established the BanziCALL prepaid VoIP service in the first quarter of 2008. We found corporate VoIP solutions from other providers to be prohibitively expensive and wanted to offer an affordable alternative to small businesses and callshops.

Initially we did white label reselling for another company, but when they ran into problems with their carriers and we were cut off as a result, we realised it was time to do our own thing. We considered buying an OEM VoIP platform, but pricing for these solutions start from R500 000 ($65 000), which would have put a huge strain on our business model.

We have had good experiences with the open source based Asterisk IP PBX software and started looking at how we could use Asterisk as the SIP server for our BanziCALL VoIP service. The main aspect of any service is billing. We found that there were several implementations of Free PBX, which basically offers you a GUI configuration of Asterisk and gives you basic billing capability. Our new service providers assisted us with getting our server running with Elastix, one of the distributions of FreePBX.

This was a quick solution to get going again, but was lacking in the following areas:
Rate tables are inflexible and complex to load
No option for prepaid billing
Not sure how to get the Customer Relationship Manager (CRM) working
We asked around and were told that A2Billing or Asterisk2Billing was the best prepaid billing platform to use for Asterisk. We soon realised that to set it up properly, we would need expert assistance. We contacted Joe Roper through http://wiki.asterisk2billing.org and agreed on a fee to get A2Billing configured.

Within 2 days from having installed the server, A2Billing was fully configured and our engineers were trained on the system. With minimal capital outlay we are now able to provide prepaid VoIP services.

We are very satisfied with A2 billing.  We have live customers on the system and from an operator's perspective it is a dream to use. We found it very easy to implement different rate plans and it is really simple to upload new rates and change a customer from one rate plan to another.  The CRM web login is a great feature and it is really useful that we can customise what the customer sees.

One of our key criteria was system performance and scalability. After doing some online research and speaking to current Asterisk users, we are confident that our initial system will be able to handle at least 100 simultaneous calls, thereby supporting up to 1000 users. If we do eventually start running out of capacity, we would simply configure additional servers with their own customers and run the systems in parallel. By running a RAID disk array on the server and using the A2Billing database backup tool, we can easily restore the system in the event of a system failure, whether due to hardware or software malfunction.

A2Billing offers a great way for startup VoIP companies to get going without huge capital outlay and we can recommend it to anyone.

We would like lots more writeups on how people are using A2Billing in a commercial environment.

It helps raise confidence in the product.
