Folks, I am new to this forum, and I have started evaluating a2billing to replace an existing home grown billing system of one of my customers.

My question is very simple, this is regarding simple calling card use. For every calling card system you provide toll free access number and many local access numbers. If a customer calls through a toll free number then needs to be charged 1-2 cents more than if he calls a local number, for same destination.

It seems like we can create two rate cards one for toll free and the other for local access. How do we tell a2billing to use appropriate rate card based on the incoming "trunk" ?

Using the 'DNID prefix' on each rate-card.

For your specific situation it is much less arduous to simply add your toll free number and additional fee to 'extra_charge_*' in a2billing.conf.

Thanks for that. Now I would like to add a little more to the requirement.
Lets say customer (same card number) subscribed to SIP/IAX IP phone. Now I want to set him a rate card if he use the IP phone to make a call. Effectively three rates for same destination ( tollfree, local and ipphone ).
How can this be done ?

In your dialplan force calls from IP phones to use a different [agi-conf] section in a2billing.conf. In this [agi-conf] use 'force_callplan_id' to select a different ratecard than the customer's default.
